The
US May DDP benzene rose by 7.5cents to 455.5c/gal from May 12. Fundamentals
continued to improve. Two sources indicated that there was a decrease in the
production of benzene from selective toluene-disproportionation units because
of negative margins. This is a supply-side bull fact for benzene. Benzene was at a 45.50 cent/gal discount to nitration grade
toluene, even though there had been a 28-cent increase in benzene since May 11. The production of on-purpose, STDP, TDP, and HDA units is
done using feedstock toluene. Sources
stated that STDP unit margins at current toluene/benzene spreads were negative
