Prices of Chinese polyethylene fell sharply in the week before April 9 due to fears about escalating USChina tensions. On April 9, US President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs against dozens of nations, including a heavy 104% duty on Chinese imports into the US. China had announced it would add an extra 34% to all US products. Data showed that amid weakening sentiments in the global economy and uncertainty, HDPE CFR Far East Asia Prices hit a 5-year low on April 9, at $870/mt -- their lowest level since June 26 2020. LLDPE and LDPE were also at a year-low. LDPE CFR Far East Asia was down $40/mt from the previous week to $1,080/mt. This is the lowest price since May 28, 2024.
