Asian Recycled LDPE Weekly Comments / Tightening import scrap licenses / Cost pressures are increasing

The Asian recycled low density polyethylene market was stable during the week ending April 9. On April 9, Asian recycled LDPE film pellets were stable from week to week at $780/mt F.O.B. Southeast Asia. The sellers have expressed concern that the current prices barely cover the costs of the recycling process. The situation is further exacerbated by the weak demand of Asian converters who claim that using recycled materials does not make sense when their costs are higher than virgin polymer prices. Asian consumers are very cost-conscious and only interested in recycled material when it helps them reduce costs. One trader highlighted challenges that Malaysian recyclers face, especially in relation to operating costs.
