the market was quiet, Asian ethylene prices remained steady at $865/mt CIF NE
Asia & $920/mt CIF SE Asia on May 16. Market
buyers continued to have a bearish outlook as the unhealthy margins in downstream
products, such as styrene monmer, were a source of concern. The low demand is attributed to a variety of macroeconomic
factors such as high interest rate, volatile upstream price, and a weaker than
expected recovery in demand from China's reopening. Southeast Asia's ethylene market was also quiet. Some sources have attributed the lack of activity to factors
such as a shortage of vessels suitable for delivery of smaller sized trades in
SEA, limiting discussion on spot transactions while supply is fitted into term
