Asian polyethylene markets were muted in the week to July 16 as buyers kept to the sidelines due to slow downstream demand and geopolitical uncertainty. In Vietnam, an import duty of 2% has been imposed on major HDPE and LLDPE grades effective July 8. The tariffs will apply to HS codes 3901.10.92, which covers "PE containing 5% or less of alpha-olefin monomers," and 3901.20.00 for "PE with a specific gravity of 0.94 or higher," as outlined in a government decree released the same day. This included commonly traded grades such as HDPE film and LLDPE film, while LDPE imports are exempt, according to sources. Previously, all PE imports into Vietnam were not subject to any tariffs.
