Due to limited firm offers, discussions
were slow in Asian ethylene markets on the 21st of July. The mood remained low, with many buyers citing
slow downstream demand. Market sources indicated that
sellers continued to feel pressured by the low ethylene demand and abundant
supply. There are several cargoes available for August arrivals. In order to
reduce inventory levels, some South Korean steam cracker operators that use
naphtha-fed steam crackers said they would lower operating rates in August due
to a bearish outlook for market recovery. It is
unlikely that demand will increase as many downstream markets remain weak and
