Lower operating costs for a bearish outlook | ABS margin remains negative

Jul 14, 2022

- Lower operating costs for a bearish outlook- ABS margin remains negative

Asian acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene
prices were assessed down by $50-55/mt on the week at $1,540-1,580/mt CFR China
and lower by $50/mt at $1,590/mt CFR Southeast Asia on July 13. Thin buying interest and lower final product
orders at both the domestic end and the export end of the market for ABS were a
major problem in the spot market. According to sources, several ABS
producers are starting to reduce their operating rates due to negative margins,
and a bearish outlook in China and South Korea, which range from 20%-60%. The Asian
styrene monomer prices fell from $50-55/mt in the upstream sector to $1,221-1,250/mt
CFR China on July 13. The Asian ABS margin was minus $82.10-87.50/mt.
