Asian Paraxylene: Prices retreat despite strength in crude / Potential production cuts by South Korea producers / Activity slow ahead of weeklong holidays in China

Asian paraxylene prices fell Sept. 26 despite a rise in upstream crude and naphtha prices. Asian paraxylene CFR Taiwan/China and FOB Korea markers at $814/mt and $793/mt, respectively, on Sept. 26, both down $3/mt day over day. A trader in China said South Korean PX and benzene producers may cut production due to weak margins. However, the development has not been confirmed yet. “I saw chemicals are weaker than crude [today],” another China-based trader said about weaker spot PX prices. Activity in the PX, purified terephthalic acid and polyester markets may slow down ahead of the weeklong holidays in China starting next week, a China-based broker said. “The atmosphere in the market has completely changed.
