The US spot export caustic soda price was
unchanged at $815-$825/dmt FOB USG on Aug. 30, a 13-year-high based on
transactions done in this range during continued tight supply. This is the highest level since February 17,
2009, when export caustic soda prices were assessed at $837.50/dmt FOB. According
to market sources, caustic soda demand remains strong. This likely gives
producers an incentive to continue operating Chlor-alkali units at high rates in
spite of waning chlorine demand. High inflation and rising interest
rates have reduced downstream demand for polyvinyl chloride. Peak summer water
treatment demand has also been seen as waning. Olin, in
company news, announced that it would permanently close a portion of its Freeport,
Texas facility's Chlor-alkali...
