New Year holidays on low inventory levels





February 8th was a slow
month for the Asian ethylene market. There were fewer offers and less
competition. Although sellers continued to receive
more inquiries than before the Lunar New Year holidays ended, they said that
there was less supply due to the operating rate cuts at many crackers in Asia. Producers maintained their firmness in selling indications
at $1.150/mt-$1.160/mt or more FOB Northeast Asia. This was due to the severely
reduced margins caused by high naphtha prices. On Feb. 8, the spread between naphtha ethylene and ethylene
was $265.50/mt- $265.55/mt, below the $300-$350/mt breakeven point. The volatility in the crude oil and upstream naphtha markets
had weighed down sentiment. This was below the typical breakeven level...
