The Asian ethylene market prices fell for
the second consecutive day on June 30, due to weak downstream margins, and low
buying appetite. Participants
stated that the second-half July supply was higher than demand. Many
naphtha-fed steam crackers in Asia were operating at 80% capacity or more,
which led to high inventories. Buyers were
worried about the negative production margins of key products like
polyethylene, mono ethylene glycol, and styrene monomers, which led to weak
demand. A buyer based in Unv1 stated that
SM margins were very weak because benzene prices are still high. To manage costs, we have reduced operating rates for SM so
there is no urgency to buy ethylene. According
