The US MTBE market saw an extended downward
price trend on Aug. 9 appetite for the gasoline blendstock continued to wane
further. The FOB US Gulf Coast MTBE price fell to 342.95 cents/gal on Aug.
9, following an offer at 343 cents/gal for a cargo loading in mid-August in the market on Close process. Requirements for winter-specs gasoline will start to
set in, a source said. This added pressure to the overall demand for blendstocks as participants assessed the economics for each of the components, including MTBE. However, RBOB gasoline futures closed higher. NYMEX
September RBOB settled at 296.02 cents/gal. This is an increase of 288.62
cents/gal on the previous day. October RBOB settled at 270.75c/gal,
an increase of 264.97c/gal.
