According to market sources, prices in
Asian ethylene markets dropped in the week ending Jan. 6, due to low demand and
abundant supply. Sources
claimed that cargoes of Malaysian origin were available. A tender was issued
Jan.19-20 for 5,000 mt ethylene. Several buyers remain concerned about weak
downstream markets. Some market sources
stated that key derivatives like polyethylene and mono ethylene glycol were
still in low demand. This resulted in a decrease in buying interest for
ethylene. The current price of US ethylene
is $550-570/mt FOB USG. Therefore, prices in Asia would have to be more than
$900-920/mt CFR Northeast Asia for the trip to be worthwhile. A trader stated that buyers in Northeast Asia will only buy
