The fundamentals of the Chinese methanol
market looked stable on August 16, despite China's slower July retail sales growth
and industrial production. According to market sources, Chinese
methanol prices are at their bottom and Zhejiang Xingxing New Energy’s
methanol-to olefin plant shut down on Aug. 15 did not make a significant impact on
prices. According to trade sources, prices would be
supported by feedstock costs for coal and natural gas. "The
cost for coal and natural gas are independent of oil. A trader
stated that even though oil is less expensive today (Aug. 16), Chinese methanol
prices have not fallen." The front-month ICE Brent futures
contract was valued at $93.33/b on Aug. 16, at 4:30 pm Singapore Time (0830 GMT). In India,
