Asian Methanol Markets: Markets remain mixed amid a diverse
mood■ China closes $5-6/mt lower crude
selloffs■ Basics in South Korea and Taiwan, with a balance to softThe week ended Aug. 5, 2008, mixed in Asian
methanol markets. Prices were lower in certain regions, stable elsewhere, and
higher in China due to varying fundamentals. Chinese import methanol
spot prices outperformed crude futures selloffs and weak downstream demand.
This could lead to possible demand destruction from central banks worldwide as
they pursue aggressive rate increases to curb inflation. The sentiment was influenced by two trades at $315-350/mt
CFR China and one at $317-350/mt CFR China on Aug. 5. CFR China methanol was
valued at $5-6/mt higher than the crude futures at $310-330/mt. However, the
active September methanol future contract on Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange
