Asian methanol prices closed the week stable as tit-for-tat tariffs between the US and China clouded the economic outlook in Asia. Uncertainty in the commodity markets, where prices can swing wildly, made it risky for market participants to take positions. "Prices can go up or down... It's hard to tell," said a trader. As such, few fixed-price bids and offers were heard in the dollar-denominated Chinese market in the week ended April 25. In Southeast Asia, fundamentals appeared bearish to balanced, even as Malaysian methanol producer Petronas Chemicals Marketing (Labuan) plans a turnaround at its 1.7 million mt/year No. 2 methanol plant on Labuan Island for 55 days starting May 1.
