- Lower plant runs make spot supplies difficult- Asia butadiene naphtha
spreads below breakeven

Asian butadiene was deemed stable on Dec.
20, due to lower steam cracker operations capped spot, butadiene
availability. Spot demand was scarcer than spot
offers this week. Although suppliers did provide some
short-term coverage, there was no spot demand. The spot demand
of end-users was also limited by negative derivatives margins and slashed
operations. The $624/mt Dec. 20, saw a $5.50/mt increase in the CFR Japan
naphtha prices. The spread in price between naphtha and
butadiene was $206-226/mt Dec. 20. This was below the breakeven spread of $300-320/mt.
Data showed that the local China butadiene cost was stable at Yuan 7,000/mt
December 20, or $869/mt if you use import-parity.
