As there was plenty of supply and weak
downstream demand, there were no discussions about spot styrene monomer cargoes
in Asia. China's SM line was shut down by a
producer due to weak demand and eroded margins. Producers in
Northeast Asia were reported to have lowered operating rates for September
because of weak demand and a weak economy. According to
market sources, the primary reason for low demand in the styrene industry was
due to weak downstream ABS demand. Because of the wide gap between
buying and selling indications, spot discussions in the export market remained
