The activity was limited in the Asian ethylene
markets on Aug. 17 due to few firm offers and bids, according to market
sources. Participants remained on the sidelines, as upstream naphtha prices were volatile and downstream demand was weak, with several citing buying confidence as low amid eroded margins. Several producers said they had no spot cargoes
available given lowered operating rates at naphtha-fed steam crackers and
balanced outputs at downstream facilities. Some traders said they continued to
receive inquiries for September shipments, but the buy-sell gap remained wide
and no deals were done. In the upstream markets, the benchmark C+F Japan naphtha
was assessed down$1.75-2.00/mt at $659.50-680.25/mt at the Asian close on Aug.
