After the Jan. contract settlement was
completed late in the previous day, bids and offers for Gulf Coast benzene fell
on Jan. 3. The temporary shutdowns of several
downstream styrene plant plants in the Gulf Coast region following the December
deep freeze could also have an impact on the benzene prices. Jan. 3 was
confirmed by at least one producer that production has resumed. Market
participants reported that the January contract settled at 311c/gal. This was 4
cents more than December's. The contract price has remained
relatively stable over the past five month, at 310c/gal on average from
September to January. DDP spot benzene for January was down 14 cents
