Asian Isomer: Prices boosted by upstream, even though participants were on the sidelines / Poor demand for gasoline in China heard Opportunity for US Arbitrage

On April 25, Asian isomer-mixed mixed xylene was up $7/mt over the previous day, at $655.50/mt. It was also up $7/mt over the day at 680.50/mt. Domestic China ex-tank assessments were down Yuan 10,723.33/mt, compared to the previous day. The poor gasoline demand was heard in Chinese as MX demand. A trader in China said, "We've temporarily stopped orthoxylene production as MX sales have been stuck... Poor demand has been seen in gasoline blend". As FOB US prices rose, Asia market participants saw an opportunity to arbitrage US contracts. A source in China said: "I heard some traders still wish to move MX to the US and think arbitrage is possible since the spread between FOB Korea to FOB US Gulf Coast at $160 to $180/mt".
