Asian methanol prices were unchanged on
Feb. 22, as buyers waited for clarity about the price direction. MTOs [methanol to-olefin] are operating at low rates
now, nobody cares whether it is 700,000.mt at the port, or 600,000.mt, so
Chinese will say that there is not enough inventory and should buy more. A few
transactions were being completed on a cash basis at Rupees 26.50/kg. However,
this trader stated that there was a shortage of stock among the middlemen and
that importers are trying to hold prices. But, there
is plenty of inventory at ports," a market source said. Importers held
firm to ex-tank prices at Rupees 26/kg because incoming cargoes had high prices.
