The opening day of trading in the
Chinese methanol market was marked by a bearish tone on Oct. 18, owing to sluggish
downstream demand, and a lower methanol-to-olefins operating rate. Yuan 40-50/mt higher in
east China than in morning trade at Yuan 2750-Yuan 2830/mt. However, they
recovered in the afternoon to Yuan 2775-2,790/mt. Oct. 18. The weak export markets and slow economic growth of China
have affected ethylene, mono ethylene glycol, polypropylene, and polyethylene
prices. However, production costs for methanol have increased due to higher
natural gas and coal prices. Ethylene is
currently priced at $850-$870/mt CFR Northeast Asia, while mono ethylene glycol
is at $470-$490/mt Northeast Asia, and propylene is at $895-$910/mt China. These
