- Imports pose a threat to
producers- Uptick in demand likely

A trader said that the European virgin polyethylene terephthalate market experienced a summer slump in the week of
August 17. Prices fell due to low demand and high inventory levels. A trader stated that
consumers were reducing their stocks which negatively impacts spot demand. Some
sources also attribute the market lull to the absence of August contract price
settlements for PET feedstocks. However, European producers remain under
pressure due to high energy costs. The
trader stated that not all consumers want to risk imports from Asia. The producer said that some consumers could begin rebuilding
their inventories after the summer break. However, market participants don't
see any supply issues, even though a turnaround period is expected to begin in
autumn.
