- Holiday in Japan Limits Discussion- Weak downstream demand keeps buyers from

August 11 was a holiday in Japan, and
activity in the Asian ethylene markets was very limited. Despite the weak
performance of downstream markets, sentiment remained bearish and buying ideas
were lower every day. Many buyers remained
on the sidelines due to slow demand in key downstream sectors like monoethylene
glycol, styrene monmer and polyethylene monomer. Due to Japan's holiday, firm offers were not as strong. Market sources indicated that discussions are expected to
resume the next day. The benchmark C+F
Japan Naphtha marker was up $15.25-20.50/mt to $715-730/mt in the upstream
markets on Aug. 11. Asian close. The spread
for ethylene-naphtha was calculated at $135-150/mt. This is lower than the
average spread of $300-$350/mt.
