Gulf spot methanol was 3 cents down on the day of May 16, despite production
facilities operating well. Geismar 2, a Methanex methanol plant in
Louisiana, which was idled May 5, has started restart operations. Sources
confirmed this after the market closed on May 15. A source stated that "[it] appears they restarted
during the weekend." It usually takes
2-3 days for the plants to return to normal (or near-normal) production rates. The US has not reported any other production problems, so it
is expected that the demand for spot materials will drop. A second source stated that the spot market would likely be
dead for several weeks if they were up. Geismar
