February-March continues contango structure / Spread of PTA/PX widens starting in week

Due to laycan rollover, and an increase
in crude oil prices, the downtrend in Asia's para xylene market came to an
abrupt halt Dec. 16. CFR Taiwan/China was up $4.50/mt at $831.83/mt. This follows
the trend of crude oil, as the ICE February Brent futures contract rose $1.29/b
to $74.57/b at Asian closing Dec. 16. Glencore
Singapore increased the Asian-origin bid to February laycan towards the Asia
close. The outstanding price is $832/mt. With
an earlier offer at flat, the contango structure continued in February and
March. Some sources expect that demand will pick up after the Lunar New Year
holidays. According to market sources,
operating rates at PET facilities remained stable at 75%-80% in China. PTA
operating rates, however, remained around 70%-72%. Despite slowing demand, bearish para xylene principles and
multiple PTA maintenance work...
