On Sept. 20, the European naphtha market
was weak with little demand from gasoline blenders and the petrochemicals
sector. One
source claimed that Europe's petrochemical demand is at risk. However, a second
source stated that a recession had most likely already begun. "The question is not "If" but how long. Sources say the average cracking rate in the region was
around 70%. This is considered low. The
automobile industry was one of the main reasons for the slow demand. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers
Association, August's new volume of EU car registrations was 12% less than in July. This is a nine-month low. The
