- Expectations for weak Asian supply in Sep Aids demand- Low buying indications amid
downstream margins erosion

As there were few offers, Asian ethylene markets
saw little trading on August 15. As supply
from Asian naphtha-fed steam crackers was expected to decrease due to reduced
operating rates and upcoming shutdowns of South Korea, some buyers requested
September shipments. Market participants stated that buying
indications were low because buyers remain concerned about the erosion of
downstream margins, especially for mono ethylene glycol, and styrene monomer. The
benchmark C+F Japan Naphtha marker was down $26.75-32.50/mt to $684700/mt as of
the Aug. 15 Asian closing. The spread for ethylene-naphtha was
$136-160/mt. This is lower than the average spread of $300-$350/mt.
