Asian Ethylene : Few buyers in April / Buyers worried about eroded margins / Ethylene-naphtha spread at $215.875/mt

The Asian ethylene market was quiet on March 26 as participants waited for the start of negotiations in May, while most buyers were covered for April. Buyers cited concerns about eroded margins downstream (particularly polyethylene) as the reason for some buying indications at $830/mt. On the day, there were few firm offers. The C+F Japan Naphtha Marker was up $1.50/mt in one day to $639.125/mt at the Asian close on March 26, 2016. The ethylene-naphtha differential was calculated at $215.875/mt. This is below the usual spreads of $250/mt or $300-$350/mt.
