Asian Ethylene: Few market discussions begin for July / Downstream weakness limits trade / SE Asia cautious on cracker startup, restart

The Asian ethylene markets saw some discussions heard for July material on May 30. Selling indications for FOB Korea cargoes were heard at discounts of $40/mt over CFR Northeast Asia, against buying indications heard at discounts of $45/mt over CFR NE Asia. A few participants cited downstream weakness and sluggish trade, noting that ethylene demand was unlikely to improve as derivative operating rates remained below capacity. Meanwhile, July ethylene supply was considered ample amid limited turnarounds. Negotiations for CFR NE Asia cargoes had yet to fully commence, with some buyers saying they were not urgently in need of material.
