Styrene producers continued purchasing spot
styrene on the market on September 14 because of higher energy costs and a
narrow margin between benzene- and styrene price pressures. One producer indicated
that they might continue to source material through November, despite the fact
that October saw more interest. According
to the producer, the need for the material came from downstream production of
styrenics becoming uneconomical due to its dependence 100% on its own monomer
production. A trader stated that the
market for styrene monomers, including ABS and polystyrene, had a very poor
outlook for September/October. The low demand and tight conditions mean that
prices will not rise. Market sources
