Sources said that the poor margins of the
petrochemical sector, which is a major consumer of naphtha amid disruptions in
supply due to low water levels on the Rhine, were putting pressure. Sources say crackers were
cutting rates to get naphtha because it was difficult to barge barrels upstream
along the Rhine. One source said that they
aren't sure if the Rhine is responsible for the lower rates or the poor
margins. Over the next few days, water
levels will rise rapidly. According to the
Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration, (WSV), levels at the Kaub were
34 cm on Aug. 18, but they are expected to rise to 67cm on Aug. 22, with
