In the week ending May 16, European markets for conventional polyether polyols saw a worsening of demand and a drop in prices, due to pressure from Chinese materials and poor downstream conditions. Polyols experienced a dramatic drop in demand due to a flood of imported materials that flooded the continent. As semi-finished goods and final products from Asia arrived in Europe, the pressure from Chinese products with competitive prices was felt throughout the value chain. The result was that buyers of polyols, polyol-based products and downstream polyols stopped purchasing European materials in favor of Asian material. Price differences between Chinese and European polyols were as high as EUR 200/mt.
