On June 30, Asian butadiene prices were
stable in thin trade. Some
traders tried to find arbitrage opportunities to ship Asian-origin cargoes into
the US. However, no fixtures were found amid high freight rates. Sources close to the trade said that the Asia-US freight
rate was around $500-530/mt. This would require traders to secure the cargo at
$1,400-1,435/mt FOB Asia in order to make the trip viable. According to in-plant news, China’s Shanghai Petrochemical
closed its 120,000 mt/year Shanghai butadiene facility after a fire at the mono
ethylene glycol production plant on June 18. According to a source, a parcel of 3,000 mt butadiene was
sold on a formula basis between South Korea and Japan, but on a CFR Northeast
Asia basis....
