Due to low demand, Asian mono ethylene glycol was downgraded on July 19. According
to market sources, China's average operating rate was around 50%. China's
naphtha-based units were at 54%, while coal-based units were slightly lower. Trade in
Southeast Asia was very limited. The new Petronas 750,000 mt/year MEG
Unit, which will be operational in the third quarter, was a welcome surprise to
traders. Producers stated that Chinese MEG prices will
rise due to higher production costs. However, end-users pointed out lower
operating rates at downstream polyester plants and persistently weak filament
yarn demand. A weak downstream textile sector in China has meant
that polyester margins have been low and an increase in demand is unlikely. Spot export
