Asian methanol began trading on Nov. 7,
with the expectation of soft to stable prices due to weak downstream demand and
China's strict anti-pandemic measures. According to market sources, China's
polypropylene production is still high at between 85% and 80%. However, PP
sales have been slow as global inflation has reined back consumer spending. Methanol-to
olefin plants to the PP margins were at a 2-year low of minus $180-$200/mt. MTO-MEG
margins were at minus $250-$270/mt. Market participants suggested that it was
more feasible to purchase imported monoethylene glycol cargoes, as prices were
only $445-$465/mt CFR China Nov. 7. Sources
said that there could be upsides to Chinese methanol prices due to unexpected
plant outages in Southeast Asia or the Middle...
