China's demand weighed down by weak
downstream Floating basis discussion preferred over
fixed prices

Asian ethylene spot prices were rangebound on April 20th from the previous session. A wide gap between seller
and buyer price expectations hampered discussion amid uncertainty about price
direction in downstream industries. According to market
sources, Asian naphtha-based cracker margins were still under pressure. This
resulted in the market offering only limited spot offerings. Sources said that buyers were also affected by low
downstream demand in China and the comparatively soft domestic Chinese prices. Given the divergent views of buyers and sellers, fixed price
spot discussions are difficult to conclude at this time. Market participants stated that floating price discussions
were more common at premiums of $15-$20/mt above the CFR Northeast Asia price.
