Spot European styrene price rose Dec. 20,
amid better-balanced conditions. This coincided with the announcement that
Trinseo would shut down their Bohlen facility in Germany, Dec. 19. Bohlen has a 300,000 mt/year Styrene plant and
an upstream 330,000 Mt/year Ethylbenzene facility. The company
stated in a Dec. 19 statement that the closure was due to an uncompetitive
market position in global styrene because of the site's small size, industry
capacity increases and high natural gas prices in Europe. Sources said
that the closure was expected and had been factored into current prices. They
did not believe the announcement to be the primary factor driving up styrene
