- Steep dive seen in upstream monomer spot prices- Thin Production Margins Under
Further Pressure

Spot activity on the European polystyrene
markets slowed on August 31 ahead of the settlement of upstream feedstock September
contract contracts. There was little trading activity. The direction of the upstream-styrene contract
prices led to prices falling at the beginning of the month. However, this was
mitigated by higher energy costs. In August, the market discussed thin
production margins for styrene monomers. These factors are expected to impact
September contract pricing. The month's demand was also under
question. There was a slowdown in activity in many polystyrene industries, including
construction. High-interest rates in Europe and fears of
recession have caused infrastructure projects to slow down and consumers to
spend less.
