Based on a lack of market
indicators, US Gulf Coast benzene price levels remained unchanged in September
1. Crude
futures dropped to their lowest level since January due to new pandemic
lockdowns by China, global economic weakness, and a continuing Wall Street
selloff. NYMEX West Texas Intermediate
futures were $2.94/b less at $86.61/b and NYMEXRBOB futures were 4.55 cents
more at $2.3853/gal. The styrene futures
market has been weaker than crude futures and this has led to a drop in benzene
prices. Sources close to company
operations say that Westlake closed its 263,000 mt/year Lake Charles, Louisiana
styrene plant on September 1. The company
