Asian
spot prices for ethylene were stable on May 12, despite largely unchanged
market fundamentals. However, buying and selling indicators remained very far
apart. Market
sources stated that buyers were reluctant to pay more for ethylene. The buying
indications for Northeast Asia were set at $1,150/mt- $1,175/mt CFR Northeast
Asia. This was due to weak margins in key downstream products like
polyethylene, nonethylene glycol, and styrene monomer. Sources said that buyers from the PVC value chains might be
able to afford higher-priced ethylene, but they are not motivated to do so
because demand remains low. Market sources
