US Gulf Benzene - Falling styrene price threatens market / Prices unchanged for the day / No deals heard done during day

The spot benzene market was relatively quiet at the end of week 9 on May 9. A variety of offers and bids were heard, but no deals were made. The price of benzene in May and June was unchanged at 247 cents/gal. One market participant stated that they were not aware of any spot transactions being made on the day. The 4 cents/gal contango between the forward-month and the front-month remained unchanged, but the backwardation on the spot styrene was higher. The benzene/styrene gap is a concern for styrene producers in the US. Styrene margins are thin as styrene prices fall in general due to the European outages being resolved.
