- Benzene market retains backwardated structure- Styrene sources await restart
at Maasvlakte

At the beginning of the week, July 18, the
European market was quiet with little activity for benzene. The market was still in backwardation from July
to August and prices fell slightly. Stock levels in Europe continued long
despite slow downstream demand. The forward delivery can for five to
thirty days was valued at $1,315.25-1,350.50/mt CIF-ARA, $1.50-2.50/mt less
than the day prior. Styrene activity downstream was also quiet. A
producer stated that the market prices were extremely insignificant on the day. Market
sources were also waiting for information about a restart at Maasvlakte POSM,
where production was halted on July 4. The spread between
the two products was estimated at $286.75-300.50/mt.
