- High natural gas prices cause a drop in demand- Spot market not affected by downstream AA

US Gulf Coast spot methanol was again lower
on the day Aug. 17 as lower offers did not entice buyers. Recently sources have
indicated falling construction demand is contributing to lower prices. Methanol
is a feedstock for formaldehyde which is used to make building materials. This
coupled with high natural gas prices and seasonal slowdowns as people go on
vacations has led to little to no spot buying interest, one source
said. Although downstream acetic acid demand has ramped back up recently, it will likely not affect the spot market as AA producers tend to be integrated, the source said.
