- Benzene market moves into contango- Styrene sellers pull back
from the market

Benzene prices on the European market rose
slightly in January 10, despite bearish activity at the beginning of the week. The 5-to-30 day forward delivery laycan for benzene
was valued at $847.75-867.85/mt. A contango structure was in place between January
laycans. As demand from the major consumer sectors
remained low, prices for styrene fell downstream. The lack of
buying interest on the market caused significant declines in offers. The spread
between the products fell to $467.50-487/mt. Producers
indicated that a spread of $400-$500/mt for styrene production was necessary in
order to offset the higher energy costs in Europe. This was
resisted by spot prices in the second half 2022. As the spread approached $400-415/mt,
liquidity in the market often slowed down.
