- Benzene-styrene spread under pressure- Last assessed at $61-66/mt

On June 9, the European benzene market
soared due to higher June delivery trade volumes and ethyl-benzene sales. On June 9, $1,800-1,840/mt
was traded. Sources claimed that they also
sold 3,000 mt ethylbenzenes at $1720-1750/mt, which was likely to be exported. As styrene prices lag gains, the benzene-styrene spread was
under pressure. This resulted in a narrow production margin between these two
products. The benzene/styrene spread was
$61-66/mt for the day. This is below the historical production spread of $250-275/mt
and well below the $400-420/mt spread that could be expected due to higher
energy costs for styrene manufacturers.
