As contract settlements were
ongoing, thin spot activity was heard on the European benzene- and styrene
market on Sept. 1. On
Aug. 31, the benzene contract price settled at $802/mt, $329/mt lower than the
August price. This was due to a bearish
trend in benzene prices throughout August. It was triggered by high stock
levels across Europe and low downstream demand. The styrene markets saw the same pattern -- prices plummeted
through August because of low downstream demand. Some producers tried to limit
run rates, but stock levels continued to rise. Sources indicated that the September styrene CP was settled
at Eur1,544/mt on Sept. 1, down Eur287/mt over August. Some market sources expected a lower fall...
