The US May DDP-benzene
price rose by 5 cents/gal, or 8 cents/gal, on May 6, amid stronger crude
futures. WTI crude futures rose $1.51/bl to
$109.77/bl on May 6, an increase of 1.39%. Benzene
rose by 1.23%. The benzene/crude ratio was
1.58 for the day, unchanged since May 5. This
ratio is currently below the 2021 average ratio 2, which is the level at which
crude and benzene are equal. Sources claim
that benzene is still undervalued relative to crude because of lower demand for downstream
styrene due to a prolonged H1 2022 styrene turnaround. According to data from the US International Trade
Commission, benzene imports rose by 91% in March as compared to February.
