- Asia's ethylene-naphtha spreads below breakeven- Asia's steam cracker runs
remain low

Asian ethylene was stable from the previous
session, but the sentiment was expected to remain bearish due to weak
downstream demand and negative margins. CFR Japan naphtha prices rose from $17.375-23.500/mt
to $769.125-800.500/mt on July 15. The spread price between ethylene
and naphtha was $90.875-95.25/mt as of July 18, which is lower than the
$300-$350/mt breakeven spread. According to market sources, the
price spread between ethylene and naphtha in Asia would remain low despite
negative margins. On July 18, the price of film-grade high-density
polyethylene was stable at $1,020-1,050/mt. On July 18,
the HDPE-ethylene spread was estimated at $160-190/mt, compared to the $150-180/mt
average spread.
